Our good friend and label-mate Oath has been rather busy of late.

He has recently been working on collaborations with Lil’ Fame (M.O.P.) for a track entitled ‘Brooklyn Bullshit’ and has completed a remix for Kid Tsunami’s ‘Bang Exclusive’ featuring Sean Price. Both will be released on 12” vinyl through Headbop Music in 2013.

On top of this, Oath has recently completed the arrangements for his upcoming instrumental E.P. on Little Wonder Productions scheduled for release early 2013.

So in the meantime he has recently uploaded a few beats to Soundcloud for our perusal. Some more of that instrumental hip-hop goodness straight from the SP-1200.

So check them out and stay tuned for more info on his upcoming releases real soon.

My 5 Fav Oz Hip Hop 12’s

01: Brothers Stoney & Bias B - ‘Boney & Stoney’

It’s fair to say I’ve given this record quite a few spins. I remember listening to it back in the day thinking: ‘yeah, this is what hip-hop is about’. No over-the-top bragging or in your face offensiveness just good beats and good raps.

This record has 6x tracks in total (including 2x instrumentals) and features the talents of Lazy Grey, Len One and Bias B (Boney & Stoney) plus Brad Strut, Jase and Prowla.

‘Lyrical Luncheon’ has got to be an all-time favourite. Who can forget that sample? It has a timeless feel to it which is why I consider it a classic. And another favourite of mine is ‘P.O.V.’ where Bias just rips the last verse. Still on par with todays standards in my opinion.

So yeah, this is my favourite Oz Hip-Hop 12”. By no means is this supposed to be a definitive list based on any one skill-set (i.e. production or mc’ing) nor is it based on any other factors other than that I’ve enjoyed listening to these records over the years and still enjoy these records to this day.

My 5 Fav Oz Hip-hop 12s.

02: Trem: ‘Amateurs’ -UR 102

To me it seems so obvious why this 12” is considered a ‘classic’. This is grimy Melbourne hip-hop at it’s finest.

Production on this was predominantly handled by Jase and also Prowla. Plus it also features a Rob Natrule remix of ‘Amateurs’ as well. To me, the raps on ‘Basic Fundamentals’ by Brad Strut and Trem stand up to (or make an embarrassment of) the majority of current releases. And of course ‘I Can See Clearly’ is a great track and still a favourite of mine.

I came across this record when working with J-Red at The Laundry. From memory there were copies of a misprinted record being handed around that I think had the same program on both sides (I could be wrong here). Somehow I managed to acquire one of the ‘good one’s’. Still pretty stoked I did.

03: Mnemonic Ascent: ‘Mnemonic Ascent E.P’ -crook001

This is another of those records I’ve given quite a few spins out at shows, as you can clearly see by the condition of the cover.

It features a couple of tracks produced by BVA, one by Raph Boogie and another couple produced by Dj Ransom including the scratchapella section ‘Agressive Panhandling’. The tracks ’Honor To Be’ featuring Lazy Grey and ‘Spoonbenders’ are still favourites of mine.

I remember being particularly impressed with the quality of production on this record when it came out. I consider both BVA and in particular Dj Ransom to be influences of mine. Ransom was and is one of Australia’s best dj’s.

04: Pegz: ‘Pegasus’ E.P. -OBR 020

This release came out at a time where it appeared things were starting to change within the oz hip-hop scene. The quality of releases that were coming out was improving, the accent debate was raging and dj battles were at the height of their popularity in Australia.

Off this release there’s a couple of tracks I’d consider ‘classics’ like ‘Every Show’ featuring Reason and produced by Suffa (Hilltop Hoods) that also featured the talents DMC Champion Dj Selekt on cuts. And also ‘Fatter’ featuring Reason spitting some heavy bars with the assistance of some Lazy Grey production.

That said, my favourite tracks now are more ‘Celebrate Daily’ produced by Jase (Beathedz) and the ‘Rogue’ (Remix) produced by Plutonic Lab which gave me at the time a glimpse of why these guys would become some of the countries best producers.

Aside from the fact this release was obviously pressed to wax, I thought it was a great example of what oz hip-hop should be: good raps, good production and proudly Australian.

#05 Bias B: ‘Hip-Hop Life’ -OBR 003

Back when I started dj’ing clubs and bars I wanted to include some Australian hip-hop into my sets and so this was the first Australian hip-hop record I purchased.

I used to bump ‘Hip-Hop Life’ a bit and naturally ‘Hursty’ tended to be the crowd favourite although I was a bigger fan of the B-side cut ‘One In A Million’.

Many years later Bias told me the story of where and when ‘One In A Million’ was written which only added to my appreciation of it. It’s still one of my favourite local hip-hop tracks to this day.

Newsense knows how to run a record label. He puts out slick media kits, calls out slack media outlets (even mouths off at them when necessary) and probably shakes down retailers who don’t pay their invoices on-time. He’s basically the Australian Suge Knight, only with more manners and less jail time.

Well Mr Sense shook us out of our self-imposed hip hop exile this week to let us know that Ciecmate is about to drop a production LP entitled ‘Chess Sounds’. Everybody’s favourite social-media Luddite has obviously pitched a fucking tent in his new studio considering this is his second full length drop this year.

I want to say that the MC’s look like a ‘Dream Team’, but that inevitably poses the question ‘Well, which one is Christian Laettner?’ and more importantly sounds really gay. And since I aint heard the whole thing yet, it is probably best just to leave the basketball metaphors on the bench.

What we do have here is the track “I Need Change” with the always on point Brad Strut ripping his patented lyrical jabs straight at your dome. Ciecmate comes correct with some booming drums that Buckwild would be pissed he never found and some frantic quitar riff that makes me think that Macgyver only has 10 seconds to diffuse a bomb with a stapler and chewing gum. It’s tight shit. Can’t say I’m completely sold on that chorus though… I reckon Ciecmate should have got Briggs to warble it.
